Our Story

Founded in 1973 by Tilden Edwards (Episcopal priest) and Gerald May (psychiatrist), The Shalem Foundation emerged from a vision to integrate deep contemplative practice with active engagement in the world. Alongside colleagues like Rose Mary Dougherty, Shalem became a pioneer in spiritual guidance and formation.

For over five decades, we have offered a contemplative foundation for spiritual directors, clergy, nonprofit leaders, and everyday individuals seeking a more authentic relationship with the divine.

Shalem is ecumenical: rooted in the Christian mystical tradition (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox), yet open to people of all faiths or none. Our name comes from the Hebrew word shalem—wholeness, integrity, peace.

Today, our work continues through training programs, retreats, and resources that foster contemplative living in a complex world.

Our Approach

We believe contemplation is not escape but a deeper engagement with reality. Our approach weaves together:

  • Contemplative Prayer: Centering Prayer, Christian meditation, and silent retreats.
  • Spiritual Guidance: Accompanying individuals on their unique journey.
  • Community: Learning and growing together in small groups.
  • Integration: Bringing contemplative awareness into daily life, work, and leadership.
